"Prison Break" worth another season

The television series that had huge question marks surrounding whether it could pull off a second season will be back for a third.

Fox’s “Prison Break,” which follows convict brothers on the run after one broke into jail to save the other from death row, has been renewed for the 2007-08 season, the network announced in a release last month.

The show debuted in August 2005 and spent its first season following brothers Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows as the former tried to save the latter from execution after falsely being accused of assassinating the vice president’s brother. Several other convicts latched onto Scofield’s break-out scheme, and the season ended with the gang making a break for it.

The show’s producers had to answer many questions once it was announced there would be a second season this year — chiefly among them, “How does a show called ‘Prison Break’ exist without anyone breaking out of prison?” What followed this season was the pursuit of the convicts across the Western Hemisphere by police, the FBI and members of the government conspiracy that framed Burrows.

The second season ended Monday4-2 with Scofield, two of his fellow escapees and the FBI agent who was chasing them all being imprisoned in Panama. In an ironic twist, Burrows was cleared of all charges and is now the one who needs to get his brother out. Most of those involved in the government cover-up, meanwhile, died or were otherwise taken out of the picture.

So where do they go from here? Will the escaped convicts travel around in a psychedelic van solving crimes with a talking dog? Perhaps they’ll get stranded on an island with a movie star, millionaire and bumbling first mate?

Fox officials did not return e-mails seeking comment, but series creator Paul Scheuring hinted to Reuters — and Monday’s finale seems to support — that the bulk of the action will occur behind bars.

“It essentially will be a new chapter,” he told the news wire service. “It’s going to return to the fundamental conceit, to the roots of what the show was about. They got scattered in the winds — their stories became separate and defused. They will come back together again. Their conflicts and interactions will return.”

This season ended with many of the remaining convicts finding their way from the prison in Illinois to Panama in pursuit of the lost fortune of legendary thief D.B. Cooper — which was unearthed and changed hands several times over the course of the season. The two brothers and a few other key convicts will be back, Scheuring said, and several new characters will be introduced.

Having averaged 9.1 million viewers this season and won its 8 p.m. Monday time slot in the coveted 18- to 34-year-old demographic, bringing “Prison Break” back is a lock — at least in theory.

This year’s plotline — which included the cons digging up a woman’s garage, a government agent turning against the feds at exactly the right moment and a few too many “convenient” reunions between the key characters — already started to stretch thin.

On top of the renewed prison escape scheme, Monday’s finale introduced a potential plotline surrounding government scientists who are monitoring Scofield, perhaps conducting an experiment on him or otherwise using him as a guinea pig of some sort.

The government — sigh — is always the bad guy, isn’t it?

Absurdities aside, it’s nearly impossible to watch an episode and not be intrigued to tune in again next week. Much like serials such as “24,” there’s enough gripping action and suspense to gloss over any plot holes; who cares how the hero wins, as long as he does.

Therein lies another draw. Like “24” or “Law and Order,” no one is safe on “Prison Break.” Three of the convicts who broke out in season one were killed this season, and a fourth was left barely hanging on at the end of Monday’s finale. Scheuring has intimated that both brothers might not survive long into season three. If for no other reason, you have to tune in to the series to see who dies.

In short, the show is still can’t-miss television.

With ratings that have held firm for two years, it appears that viewers will go with the changes and retain interest in “Prison Break” for however long it stays on the air — or at least as long as the family’s long-lost cousin doesn’t join them on a trip to an Wild West ghost town.

Et je vais regarder aussi, mais, juste j'ai peur... et je suis déçue aussi, mais bon, j'aime trop savoir la fin des histoires, donc je regarderais...avec espoir (et plaisir quand même, même si R.I.P la Saison 1 )

Case in point: Prison Break producers are already hard at work casting a slew of new series-regular roles, including a male in his forties (King Kong's Thomas Kretschmann is the prototype) and a strong-willed female in her thirties (likely a love interest for Lincoln).

J'ai eu un flash concernant la saison 3, pour redonner de l'intérêt et la tension à la série, il va falloir un choc soit dès le 1er épisode, soit dans les suivants.
Mon idée : idem qu'en début de saison 2, tuer un personnage principal mais ici j'entend que Lincoln meurt, sinon je ne vois pas trop comment nous surprendre. (ps je me suis spoilé sur le final de la saison 2, et Linc' tous seul je n'aime pas du tous.....).

Lol, Hawkins, je n'ai pas tout compris à ce que tu dis, mais si tu n'as pas (encore) vu la fin de la saison 2, je t'y invite...

Series creator Paul Scheuring has said that season three will be broadly about redemption. What does that mean for Sara and her drug addiction?

In the last episode of series two Sara crosses a line and makes a decision that she would previously have been incapable of. She turns a corner into becoming somebody she didn't know she could be, so I think dealing with the consequences of that is probably gonna take her the better part of the third season. How that will affect her sobriety is very much up in the air right now - I don't think a single line of dialogue has been written yet - but there'll be a lot of reckoning for everybody.
